“Whoever receives you receives me and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me”
Welcoming was an important part of Jesus’s ministry. He taught his followers to include others, especially those who might feel excluded. There are many bible passages from Paul, Luke, Peter, and Mathew that focus on welcoming. Jesus, himself, was often both “host” and “guest”.
The goal of this Ministry is to make everyone feel welcome, to help people participate at Mass, and to form Community. All who enter should feel a sense of Christian welcome. When people begin forming a community before the start of Mass they are better prepared to join in the activities of singing, speaking, listening, and observing silences together. This is particularly important, since many parishioners at SJV are visitors. When you greet people at church, you are greeting each one as a child of God and in doing so, welcoming God.
Ushers and Greeters are involved in many aspects of the mass. They prepare the Church, greet people as they enter and leave, seat parishioners, when necessary, take up gifts (collections), manage communion access, give out bulletins/song sheets, and help in emergencies. To join, you must be a registered parishioner, take the annual Safe Environment Training course, and pass a background check). And—you should enjoy meeting/talking with people.
New members will receive “on-the job” training. SJV utilizes an on-line scheduling system for you to sign up for the dates when you want to serve. (If you do not have digital access, we can help). The group meets annually to review and provide feedback about the Ministry and spend time with other team members.
