(Taken from the Workbook for Lector’s, Gospel Readers and Proclaimers of the Word 2021)
The Liturgy (the Mass) is a celebration of the whole community. Crucial to this is the Liturgy of the Word, through which the Holy Spirit awakens the faith. To read the Word of God is an act of proclamation of the faith itself.
The Liturgy of the Word typically consists of a reading from the Old Testament, a reading from the New Testament and a reading from the Gospels. Lay Ministers of the Word are responsible for the first two. Those who volunteer for this ministry will be provided a workbook with the year’s readings based on the current cycle (A, B or C) so that they may practice. In addition, volunteers will be given training and support from experienced lectors.
Ministers of the Word are given the opportunity to choose the dates they would like to serve through our online ministry scheduler. Thus if you are here only part of the year, you can still participate as a lector. If an emergency comes up, substitutes can be requested.
Please consider serving in this ministry. Engagement with our Liturgy community, and deepening your life in that community are precisely what you accomplish as a Minister of the Word.
