“Whoever receives you receives me and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me”
Importance of Ministry
Welcoming and serving was an important part of Jesus’s ministry. Many bible passages in the New Testament focus on welcoming and serving others. Jesus taught his followers to include others, especially those who might feel excluded. He, himself, saw his mission as “coming to serve, not to be served”.
The goal of this ministry is to make everyone feel welcome, to help people participate at Mass, and to form community. All who enter should feel a sense of Christian welcome. When people begin forming a community before the start of mass, they are better prepared to join in the activities of singing, speaking, listening, and observing silences together. This is particularly important, since many parishioners at SJV are visitors. When you greet people at church, you are greeting each one as a child of God and as a brother or sister in Christ.
Ministry Qualifications
To join the ministry, you must meet the following qualifications: be a registered parishioner, complete the New Volunteer Onboarding requirements which includes filling out an application, complete Safe Environment training (SET), and passing a background check. A minister should feel comfortable serving others and enjoy meeting and talking with people. New ministers will receive “on-the job” training after completing the Onboarding requirements. SJV utilizes an on-line scheduling system where ministers can control when and how often they wish to be on the schedule.
Ministries Tasks
Ushers and Greeters are involved in many aspects of the mass and work as a team in performing the following duties: arrive 25 minutes before mass, turn on fans and TV monitors, greet parishioners and hand out bulletins, ring the wall bells to begin Mass, seat parishioners who come in late, select and direct gift bearers, take up and secure collections, manage Communion lines, say goodbye to parishioners, answer questions and know about church facilities, tidy up the church after mass.
